as per title, what is the best value hardtail i.e. the bike with the highest spec. components for under £ 400;

must have suspension forks
3 x 9 gears, not gripshift
available in 19 or 20 in frame (Horizontal top tube circa 600 mm)
hydraulic disc brakes

.... so far my trawling the web for new bikes is showing felt q620 for £ 370 - any one can top that?

.... well I would look for s/h on ebay but not found anything as yet or else it goes for too much IMO (ideally I want something a bit battered to make it less attractive to theft as it is going to be my commute bike).

For example today - used Felt bike sold £ 345, factor in £ 25 petrol to collect then change from 8 to 9 speed - shifters and cassette, now compare to the new felt I listed that is new, delivered free and with guarantee for £ 370 so the new one works out the better deal.

I'm not quite with you...
You want a battered commuter, so why consider new?

OK, is the Felt in your example the same model? If so, it's a poor deal.
Why do you need to change from 8 to 9 speed?

£400 will get you a very nice lightweight older bike with decent components that will outperform any overweight £400 modern junk. You don't even need to spend that much. Last year, I bought my daughter a Kona Kula for £170, virtually unused. New, it was over £1000, 10 years ago. It's a much better bike than anything you'll find for £400 today.

+1

my hack/daily bike cost me about £250 all in, a lot less when you factor in the parts that came with it i sold. it has a mad mix of slx,lx, xt and xtr vs.

its yellow tacky and garish, i have a cycle shed at work so it is never unlocked, but the gangs of kids i cycle past on the canal daily never give it a second glance. When riding my cove modern i get lots of "sick bike mate" comments.

the brakes on the commuter amaze me on a daily basis at the bottom of a 30mph hill, where the gentlest one finger squeeze brings me to a smooth stop in time for the island

The yutes will target any bike, but IMO disc brakes immediately make it more attractive . the bland modern colour schemes, hydrofromed tubes and bizzarely placed decals make them all look uniform, but the kids seem to like that.

this was posted in cycling bargains

if your working get your employer to sign up to the cycle to work scheme and get an £800 bike for £400.

you could get an xtr specced mint bike here for £400

coz I am not finding anything with the I components listed in the correct size and in that price range.

I suppose I can just carry on using my 1999 GF which has XT/LX/carbon fibre goodness that cost over £ 1500 to commute and just factor in some depreciation but that seems a bit of a waste.

^^^^ I saw the GT - but has mechanical discs and is 3x8

Nothing wrong with 8 speed. 9 and 10. Speed is a marketting gimic is all. Its still 11 32 ratios. Just without a gear you didn't need

Ten speed is the latest gimic. Why don't you want that
