Hi
I bought this Caldera, and I think the crankset is probably the weakest component, in need of an upgrade. It weighs a ton and looks crap.
Anybody got anything better on offer? I'm not sure what, but pretty much anything will be an upgrade I think.
Thanks!

Any idea the age of the bike?

Is the existing crank square taper? Are you looking for something with the same size rings so you can swap over with minimum effort?

Yes, it's square taper.

And I think similar sized rings would work best. I tried a oval set I have lying around and it wouldn't fit (the bulge in the smallest oval ring rubbed on the chain stay).

I'm a bit new to this so not sure exactly what I need.

It's a 1999 Kona Caldera. I believe originally it would have had LX crank set.

Thanks

Looks like it would have had stx-rc crankset on it originally

Anything from that age should work well though

To save weight the best bet would be to make the switch to a Hollowtech II type setup and replace the bottom bracket at the same time.

I've got a nice LX (M580) model in tidy condition for sale at the moment in case that's useful, can include the bottom bracket though it might need a couple more spacers, depending on your frame - just PM if you want details

I've got a nice bontrager/sram gxp triple 104bcd, 175mm arms chainset and matching bb in good condition. Will certainly be an upgrade for you. I can take some pictures tomorrow for you if it's of interest. After £30 posted.

Sorry, it took me a while to find the chainset. It's in worse condition than i remembered but is a decent chainset. Needs a new outer (44t) ring, but the others are usable. BB is a bit dry but will certainly be ok for a while.

Given it's in a worse state than i recalled you can have it for postage which will be about £8.

The Bontrager chainset I'm selling (link above) is period correct and will work on your BB length...should bosh straight on. (The STX RC crank should be on a 113 mm axle, same as the Bonty needs) :-)
