Headset or bearings retainer ring

rearwheel

Retro Guru
Hi, after a recent ebay purchase, I discovered the headset was misaligned. After taking it apart I discovered one of the 'bearings retainer ring' was bent and one of the bearings fell out, which probably explains the bend.

Anyway, are bearing retainers all much the same or should I opt for a certain type.

The bike in question is an old model of Specialised Allez sport. Cheers.

Re:

if they are ball bearings as opposed to roller bearings, ditch the retainer and use loose balls packed with grease. You may need some additional balls to take up the space which was occupied by the retainer between each ball

Dont' want to faff around with bearings. Probably better to get a new headset...mmm...but then I'd need to hammer out the headtube races, which'll be a bugger.

If it's the caged bearing race you are describing, as Pigman says just use loose bearings, pack the cup with grease then use the grease to stick the loose ball bearings in. It'll be less hassle than knocking out the headset cups and pressing new ones in...
