Wanted: Pub Bike, 24"-25", £100ish

Retro Guru
Hello,

I am after a steel pub/town/shopping bike - either a sensible road bike (i.e. with 32c+ tyres and mudguards) or a large gents town bike (no SA hubs or rod brakes though please!). It will in all likelihood perennially live in the garage, and it's going to get knocked around in the stands in town, so nothing with fancy thin tubing - something like a lower-end 531 British bike from the 70s or 80s, or Peugeot Carbolite. It will probably get north road bars and racks either end, so nothing you're precious about!

It needs to be large - either 24" or 25" would be suitable.

I'm not too bothered about the aesthetic condition so long as it's okay mechanically.

I'd like to spend less than a hundred quid - and I live in York, so it'll need to be nearby or posted.

Cheers!
Lewis

Re:

I have a couple of potential 24" options for you.

1) A Raleigh Ace in excellent almost original condition, but will need a service as been sat a while. The only thing not original are the wheels. The rear was buckled beyond repair when I got it so it bow has a set of alloy Weinmans on. It's the five speed model. Looking for £80 for it.

2) A Raleigh Richmond I restored for the same reason. Powder coated with no decals. Swapped the flat bars for drops and the old Huret drive train for a 10 speed Suntour setup. Also has alloy Weinman rims rather than original steel. New saddle and bar tape too A bit more expensive and above your budget at £150, but less than spent on it. I'll need to fit the wheels and tune the breaks / gears, but other than that ready to go.

I'm in Newcastle so happy to meet half way if it helps.

Oh yep they both sound promising - do you mind PM'ing some photos? Also what are the tyre/mudguard clearances like?

Re:

Will do. They're in a garage I rent up the road so will either be tomorrow or Wednesday before I can get up there (there's no light in there so no good at night).

Re:

Some pics of the Richmond.

The wheels need a clean, the free wheel fitting and some skewers (which I'll do), I just put them on there to get a good view of the bike.

I'll try to get some of the Ace later on / tomorrow morning.

Phil

Re:

I have a mahooosive Carlton Grand Prix in working (pretty rough) condition. I use it regularly, everything works. All it needs it bar tape. It has almost brand new tyres and tubes.

It's £40, however I'm in Bolton, so quite a drive (would rather not post).

It's got the original pannier rack back on it now.
