Cheers foz. Frame is a c.1990 Raleigh MTB frame, low end steel, has a thin sleeve with what looks like half a ball bearing at bottom of seat tube, it protrudes so a cartridge won't go in. It won't budge, it's definitely not an old BB bearing stuck in the hole!

It certainly is! Have gazed at it for a good while and its definitely 'meant to be there' even though I've fitted cartridge BBs in similar frames before... reason I need to do so is owner of bike has a more modern Alivio chainset he wants fitting and it requires shorter than OE axle.

Found it! shimano 600, 68mm shell, 113mm spindle length. There's a nasty section of pitting on one of the cones though. Will still turn round, but might not be too smooth... I thought I had another one in better condition, but it's not in the box of bits so is either hiding or in use somewhere!
if you can use it, it's yours for postage (which is a fiver from here (Spain)
