The absolutely epic race that's also referred to as Neige - Bastogne - Neige! 174 starters, 21 finishers, over half the peloton dropped out within the first hour.
The only race that's comparable in terms of its sheer brutality and attrition was the Gavia stage of the 1988 Giro. On the one hand, Liege was run over the full distance of 250+km while the Gavia stage was shortened to about 120km. On the other hand, there's the small matter of a 2600+m Alpine pass! I wouldn't want to do either in those conditions, that goes without saying.
I don't have a DVD I'm afraid, and there's not much in the way of videos online.
This one shows a bit more action from the racehttp://www.cyclingfever.com/video.html? ... d=NzMwNg==
while this one has an interview with Hinault after the racehttp://www.sonuma.be/archive/li%C3%A8ge ... s-la-neige
though I think the single still photo sums it up far better.
