Condition of this Road Fork

Hi, I recently purchased a 2nd hand Specialized Allez on ebay (MPN 9010-7156, 9010-7256).

I've removed the forks and had a look. The condition of the forks is below what I expected (see photo). Would you say this corrosion adversely affects the forks? Is there a recommended way to paint over this corrosion?

The allen key bolt (for front brake caliper) can't be removed - it just spins in the hole although I think this is normal?

The hole on underside of the fork (looking up steerer tube) seems wrong. Can anyone suggest what's happened there?

The Lump of alloy there is pretty thick and that damage is from salt water spray clean it off re-paint it and away you go

So you think it's just the finish of the welding?

No it is corrosion from salt water (gritting), but that part is a solid casting of Aluminium so no worries, just knock the old corrosion off and give it a paint the protect again.

What paint would you recommend for the job? There are also a few similar smaller chips on the rest of the bike.

IIRC the brake bolt should just tap out. Might be held in by corrosion/dirt though.

At the moment I am using a ridiculously cheap spray paint made by 151 and it is pretty good (For 99p a can :shock: ). Not sure if you have a QD store anywhere near you? But most spray paint will do it good prep is key give it a good rub down with a course-ish sandpaper then use a primer.

All looks OK, just a quick clean up and some new paint will be fine.

Screw a long M6 bolt (or studding) into the nut from the front (same way the brake fits) and give it a tap with a mallet to remove.

Should I sand the corroded area beforehand?
