They keep the crap from spinning off into your face at the front, and stop the front mech getting jammed by mud from the rear. Remarkably effective.

People pay for all sorts of things you might not appreciate or understand. I just takes a little thought and humility.

I've had quite a few of them, they are, as you point out, remarkably effective. However, I've never paid for one, they've all been either promo freebies or home made. I was honestly a bit shocked to find that people seem to think that charging close to a tenner for less than a penny's worth of plastic is reasonable. The ones we had made up as giveaways at work cost less than 10 euros cut and printed. But that was for 500.
