7 speed chain on 8 speed cassette?

Sorry if i`ve posted in the wrong section. So i bought a 4 pound KMC Z50 chain(116 links) for future use on one of my 3x7 mountain bikes.

On the box it says it`s compatible with 6/7 speed cassettes which is fine. But if i remember correctly, 8/9 speed chains also have 116 links. If my figures are right, can`t i use my Z50 chain on a 8 speed cassette if i wanted to? I imagine the inner width is roughly the same.

If i could get away with it, no point in spending twice as much money for achieving the same purpose. I tried googling the issue, but i got no results.

The chain is identical in terms of width for 7 or 8, so will fit.

Length depends on your cassette, chain ring sizes and chainstay length, nothing else. Shimano's way to set length is to wrap the chain big-big, then add two links. Works every time for me.
