Cheap and cheerful Chinese jobbies. Torchythebatteryboy on eBay has a decent set for around £20 if you just want to give it a go.
 
It is years now I have been using the Ebay specials, if you are impatient you can buy them from a UK supplier.

With a wee bit of fettling they are very robust.

Crazy to think when I was a bairn my grandpa still used a paraffin lamp. Or was it whale oil?
 
These have great headlights but poo battery case - one of mine is still in Wendover Woods somewhere.

They need a fettle as highlandsflyer says. The lowest setting is enough to 'see' by without being to bright for oncoming traffic. They last a good few hours.

This version is a bit naff but has a better battery solution

Bear in the mind the waterproofing of the battery packs is absolutely awful. The lights are fine though so perhaps pop the battery in a pocket/backpack/breadbag. They also stay fairly dry when slung under the top tube at the seat post end. From experience, under the saddle invites certain death after a few months.

I picked up a couple of these waterproof bags a while back so should be perfect?

I have a spare one.
