just trying to set myself up for removing some pistons on my hope brakes, but cant figure out how to attach the length of pipe to my pump so i can put some air in the caliper and push the piston out - i get how to attach the bleed nipple, but cant figure out how to attach te other end of te pipe to create a seal that wont just pop off when pumping air into te caliper...

see here:

Presta or shraeder?

Maybe the valve cut off an inner tube and tube goes over it?

Whichever the tubing fits better. So long as your tubing isn't really really floppy you shouldn't need the valve or anything.

FWIW, I've never used anything like the setup shown in the OP - which it seems to me would do one piston fine but leave you a bit stuck for other(s). I have a Joe Blow which came with an adapter for airbeds etc

I just pop that into the schraeder side of my pump and then squeeze the top into the hole the bleed nipple has come out of etc.

Sometimes zipties help.
