Mixing shimano 10sp chainset with 9sp drivetrain?

My Trek is equipped with 9sp Dura Ace 7700. Am looking to replace the chainset. Has anyone ever tried running a 10sp chainset (ultegra 6700) with a 9sp chain?

Am I daft in thinking that the only issue will be a slightly thinner chainring?

I've used a 10 speed Truvativ road triple with a 9 speed Shimano chain and it worked just fine.

I've done it both ways, 9 speed chain set, 10 speed driveline, and 10 speed chain set, 9 speed everything else.
The differences in thickness aren't enough to affect how it works

I've run a 10 speed chainset on 9 speed for over a decade now. No trouble.

I've even thrown Sram in the mix as well and it still worked
