Help please seatpost stuck in the frame, any ideas?

Ive just bought this Trek 1000 off of Ebay, the only problem with the bike is that the seatpost has snapped off,

do any of you chaps out there have any ideas on how to get the little blighter out, without destroying the frame eeeeek

Caustic soda
My brother had used this as have many others on here. Nasty stuff but be careful and you will be fine

Probably worth asking in the pre '97 retro chat section and you will get plenty of friendly help from more helpful people than me! :roll:

Caustic soda is sometimes used to dissolve aluminium seatposts, in steel frames only.
It would seriously would damage an aluminium frame.

It looks like someone as had a go at getting it out already, and not much seatpost is left sticking out, to grip onto, and work with.

Probably the best method left for you is to try and cut it out with an hacksaw.

From Sheldon Brown website:

"Cut the seatpost off so that about 1/2" is left sticking out, then insert a hacksaw blade into the seatpost and carefully cut a slit (vertically down) in the post. This is very laborious, and you run the risk of damaging the frame if you cut too far, but this approach cannot fail. Once you have cut the slit, grab one edge of the cut with a locking plier and roll the seatpost up inside itself and pull it out."

Or maybe you could take it to a local bike shop, see if they can do it.

Quite right, caustic soda only works when aluminium post is stuck in a steel frame so this is no hope to you at all.

As Ceefax says, Sheldon Brown is a great site/technical assistance for things such as this so well worth a look.
