my mates building up a bike an he asking me about shimano an sram compatabilty an I m not sure how it works

matey wants to use
sram xo grip shift either a shimano rear mech or sram xo
an he says an xo front mech doesn't seem to exist so can a shimano front mech be used

I know the old sram esp doesn't work with shimano but not a clue about the new products

If he wants a Shimano 2:1 system he could run their rear mech with an SRAM Attack/Rocket shifter (grip or trigger) and either brand's cassette. I prefer SRAM (or KMC) chains over Shimano, vice versa on the cassette. As stated no issues with front mechs, both work with both brand's shifters.

As above; rear mechs are not cross compatible unless using Sram attack trigger shifters. Front mechs aren't an issue because the cable pull is the same.

However, just to confuse things if you run Sram X whatever nine speed triggers you can bodge a Shimano clutch mech on to the bike with the use of a 6mm spacer on the cable clamp.
