I know it's a noobish question, but how do you measure the shock size? (when you're lacking the shock)

I salvaged a rocky mountain pipeline frame that's been mostly stripped... I have everything I need to rebuild it back to working (from a hardtail with a split weld) except the rear shock. How would I go about measuring for the shock? The bikepedia and bbb both say it was a 4-6" shock, I'm assuming though that that was the vertical movement of the rear wheel as opposed to the stroke length of the shock.

Thanks in advance.
