Newbie question - pedals and shoes

I've recently bought my first road bike, a used Bianchi, and while I've enjoyed riding it without proper cycling shoes, I suspect it's now time to invest in a pair.

I have these pedals, which I suspect are of the toe clip type.
I'm however having difficulties finding compatible shoes, can anyone point me in the right direction? Would it be better to get a SPD pedal system and shoes for a beginner?

I'd go for clipless MTB style (SPD or Time ATAC) personally and not a road based system. All the benefits of the clips but easier and safer to get in and out of.

I'd go for an SPD system.

Shimano PD-M324 pedals, best pedals for everyday or off road use, single side flat and single SPD, my fave pedals.

Sports Direct have some cheap cycling shoes. MBS ones are mountain bike, a grippy flexible sole not a solid can walk in 'em sole or the RBS road shoe. Don't know how they hold up but 'proper' cycling brand shoes are expensive.

You could get the shoes first try with your clips and pedals and then move on to the SPDs.

Off course there's Ebay alternatives, just don't for get 2nd hand pedals/shoes may not come with cleats.

Going to SPD was the best change I made on my road bike. I'd just get some cheap Shimano M520 or m324 which are all the pedal most people will ever really need.

Aldi have cycling shoes from Thursday and do a road style, which should be comfortable and hard wearing (and you can try them on):

In my view, it depends on how serious you are on your road bike? If you are going to buy some cycle shoes (assuming that you don't have MTB shoes) then it may as well be road shoes as they are far better for comfort and power transfer on road bikes. Look KEO Classics are a good 'starter' clipless pedal and almost all road shoes have 3 bolt fixings.

If you are using pedals and clips as pictured you'll want a flat soled shoe, like skate shoe etc.
I'm still suffering clips on my pedals too I really should try fancy pants SPD or something for road at least....
