So, how did you manage to fit the 29" wheel in your 26" forks without the tyre touching the brace long before the axle was in the dropouts?
Unless they're Mavericks, in which case you'll get a rude awakening when the tyre hits the crown on full compression......
If you just fitted the 26" wheel in the 29" forks then you've ended up with the same axle-crown dimension but 50mm less travel.
So not the find of the century then.

does this not mean similar length fork (500mm) but now with less travel? (100mm vs 150mm)??

handy if you want to do some XC riding and have a 29'er fork laying around the place, otherwise pretty pointless, they make 26" forks for this sort of thing.
The "norm" is fitting a 29'er fork and wheel to a frame designed for 26" front wheel = a 69'er.

The stanchion length is nothing to do with the travel, only obviously must exceed it. Some makes have travel + 15mm, others have more or less. Your 29er 100mm travel fork is still just 100mm travel unless it was capable of being converted and has been.
Try taking all the air out if it is an air shock and measure the travel.
