Respraying Old Suspension Forks

My cousin was all set to bin his 98 GT Timberline the other day so I rescued it from him to fix up for a general playbike with the kids. Needs a few bits like new cranks, brakes and cables and the seatpost has welded itself in but that's all bits I can fix. The thing I'm not sure about is refurbishing the forks, they are only Indy S's but they work fine so I don't really want to spend much to replace them. The bridge and all around the bottom of the forks has corroded and lost the paint, is it possible to rub them down and repaint them or is it a waste of time?
Need to completely strip the frame anyway to respray it and caustic soda the seatpost out.

Definitely. Bit of time and a relatively low cost and you could have them looking nearly like new again. Harrybur... has just repainted his Fox fork lowers: viewtopic.php?f=41&t=258322

Some careful masking and you could repaint them as they are. For a better job you'd be best removing the uppers.
