£ 20, buy two. I run a pair of these from one battery pack (had to solder on a second lead); not sure what the run time is but battery pack uses 4 18360 batteries in parallel, maybe 12 hour.
there are similar models, this one has a clamp as opposed to o-ring to clamp to bars.

As 02gf74 says, there are lots of very bright, low cost lights available on Ebay and I have a set of Magicshine lights. However, for commuting I wanted something that was a single unit that could be quickly removed from the bike when I have to lock it up outside and I bought a Cateye Nano Shot Plus: http://road.cc/content/review/72875-cateye-nano-shot-plus-front-light. Quite expensive compared to some of the Ebay lights, but it works well, seems well made and is plenty bright enough for cycling on completely unlit roads and paths. It also has quite a nice beem patern, unlike my Magicshine light which puts out a big round flood of light, it seems to direct more light downwards, towards to ground ahead of you, which probably makes it a bit more road friendly and less dazzling for oncoming traffic.

£15 quid is a bargain been using for a year but I also use a Ledlenser MT7 tactical torch

(this is a bit pricey) but it lights everything up for 100metres, had countless people on the canal asking what the hell torch I was using as they could see me from half a mile away

Another handy function of this torch is that at the one end has an in-built glass breaker handy for those pesky drivers!!

I use twin Blackburn Fleas (Li-ion LED lights) mounted to my fork stanchions (vertically) which gives a frankly awesome beam spread in front of you - with a brighter patch in the middle where the beam edges cross.

Can be complemented by use of a Maglite/similar handlebar-mounted (which can be set more easily to flash than having to reach down & press the buttons on the Blackburns - tho you get used to that pretty easily.) The bad news is these are not 'cheap' (15-20 quid each) but are USB & mains rechargeable, which means they can be recharged at work from your desktop or a plug with a mains-USB adapter. They won't give a distant beam further than about 30ft, but a wide beam spread (with two). I use mine on towpaths & lanes & never had any issues. Also bright enough on full twin-beam to get cars to give you right of way if you're heading towards them on a lane! Real-world size is about 2" by 1.5" so they don't weigh 'much'! Velcro fastenings tho, but they are sturdy and convenient, I guess, just take care to do them tight enough!
Wouldn't recommend if you're in unfamiliar territory, but if it's a commute the chances are you know the route!
