Cheap Winter/Crosser/Touring/29er Frame - with disc mounts

Hi All

Looking for advice. I have a 2010 Specialized Rockhopper SL which is now surplus to requirements (it got me back in cycling!), it has Deore gearing and Auriga Pro Hydraulic Disc brakes, Spesh stem, seatpost etc.

I am looking to make some sort of flatbar winter road/crosser/commute thing.

I want to buy a frame that I can mount most of this kit onto, I want a road wheel size (700c?)/29er frame. It needs disc mounts, take guards, possibly rack mounts, fork etc, disc wheels can be bought separately.

On top of all that I want it to be done on a budget, but not be too heavy (I would like to try a few CX races end of next year).

Can anyone suggest frame/fork, be it low cost new (happy to buy online) or used. Disc mounts are essential.

Willing to consider CX/Tourer/29er types.

Any problems I may encounter with moving kit over, BB/seatpost/stem size?

This is ugly and no longer available new but comes with disc mounts, the frame has clearance for 29er tyres up to 2.2" though the forks may need replaced and was designed as a hybrid tourer but might not suit CX although it is alloy and thus reasonably lightweight.

Wow that is fugly. I think I may have seen one or a similar one in Decathlon before... I recall it had Hydraulic Rim brakes, which I thought had long since gone obsolete.

I am thinking something like a used Kaffenback, or even new...

(but missing a fork!)

Would that work with flat bars, not sure how CXs ride? Flat bar is currently my only option to utilise the brakes I have.

Have you tried a 700c wheel in you rockhopper frame? Might be just enough clearance with a cross tyre. I used to have a knackered orbea mtb that would take road wheels.

Not tried, I could try a road wheel in it for size.

700C wheel and tyre will fit in many MTB frames, just add a rigid fork with 420mm A/C or more and hey presto one 29er. You may not be able to fit the fatter MTB tyres as clearance becomes pretty tight but I found some 700x35C Speedkings were fine and far better on road / trail. Perhaps have a look at my "Frankenbike" link in my sig as I did exactly this with a cheapo but light end result. I have since added a stem with some rise and a flatbar with barends to make it more suited to road rides so easy to tailor and most of your current kit will do the job just fine.

How do 26in wheeled bikes handle, when you stick 29in wheels on them?

What is the difference between a 29in with low profile tyres, and 26in with fat tyres? Much in it?

So option...

1/I can keep the bike as its is, change the wheels and the fork
or
2/Buy a new frame/fork and wheels...

So thinking about it option 1 looks the cheapest, if a fork on its own doesn't cost the earth.

Q. Is a 29in wheel and road wheel (700c?) the same size, as I have spare road wheels I could try just for size.

Where can I get disc 29er wheels at a bagain price, but light-ish -Superstar Comp?

Disc forks available here:

No reason why you couldn't flat bar it (they used to sell it built up as a flat-bar bike). I've one of the pre-disc Kaffs (with drop bars).
