9 speed chains and removal

I'm very used to cheating on removing my 8 speed chain, but pusing the pin out far enough to decouple the chain, but to still be in the back plate, and then pushing it back in when done. It has never let me down yet. Is this still possible on a 9 speed chain? I had heard that there was something different about the 9 speed chain which made this really really inadvisable rather than simply 'we don't like you doing this because it eats into our profits on new pins'. If not, suggestions on powerlinks? BTW, is a Shimano 73 chain.

Thanks

Done many times on the same Shimano 9spd chain and re-used the pin, never a problem. Saying that it'll probably snap now, snapped a chain a couple of weeks ago but not at the pin.

i've done it too a cople oif times - make sure the pins goes in square else it can damage the plate and so will not be held in place so more likely to fail in use. .. but powerlink saves a lot of faffing about
