Having read recently about the rise in bike theft and also seeing yet another post about a bike being stolen - MADJEZ on this occasion here:

does being on the bike register increase the likelihood of recovering your bike? Does the sticker on the frame deter the thieves?
Are your bikes registered? (One of mine is) Have you recovered your bike by it being registered? Or do we all have to go and fit trackers down the seat tube.

Thanks Michael for that, will give it a look.

I also wondered about things like postcode stamping as a. I'm about to move house b. they can be filed off c. I'm not necessarily going to keep all the frames forever.

Anyone had any experience with the smart water/datatag stuff you paint on ?

Sadly the best deterent (which I use with the Zaskar) is just NEVER EVER leave it locked anywhere.

You can get your bike 'etched' with smartwater by the Police and the bike is then automatically registered. It's free and takes a few minutes during which they etch a code number on the underside of the downtube. You can switch the address when you move but if you're going for a respray you'll probably need to get it re-registered.

That's true but I believe the criteria for proving that it was stolen while it was wearing the Kryptonite lock are pretty stringent and involve producing the whole lock etc.

The problem with the schemes is the policing of it afterwards.

Most cops will openly admit finding stolen bikes is not high on their radar and most bikes that are returned..and the number is minute...happen by accident say when they round up the local scallys and a bike just happens to be amongst their latest haul

If it gives you peace of mind then hey..you spend your money however you want

None of them stop a thief from stealing a bike, they just marginally increase the chance of getting it back. The advent of eBay and the increased market for parts means that thieves are happy to strip and flip bikes and discard the frame.
Only a f*ck off big lock will stop/slow a thief if you have to leave a bike outside, only insurance will ease the pain when it does get stolen.

...A theory a work colleague adhered to...and came back to find just the lock after they cut the frame off the lock to have the components.....as a result of his experience I'm of the never EVER leave it locked up anywhere school of thought

Why its worth building a cheap scabber up or even better a scrappy bike 10 - 15 quid your lock will prolly be worth more.
