Front mechs; conventional or top swing, whats the pros/cons?

I'd say conventional has more chance of damage in a spill, and top swing is quite nice the way it hides away.

The pivots in conventional mechs tend to last a lot longer. Every top swing mech I've had has ended up very rattly as the smaller pivot bushes wear out.

I don't like my Top Swings, mud and stones around here collect in it rending it useless. Quite a few times in the slight muddy conditions where stones and things can get picked up it's had granny gear rendered unusable as they get under the pivots and jam it.
(acts as a stop)

They have a tidier cable route for top pull setup though.

You may be dictated by the frame tubing (and flaring/ovalising at the bottom stop use of top swing or bottle boss position can stop use of bottom swing.

I prefer the look of bottom swing.

I've had no problems with the XTR top-swing on my Y2K Explosif fitted out of choice, and I shall be fitting an XT top-swing to my RSP FRS because a conventional wouldn't fit the frame anyway...
