Fake Chis King hubs?

I bought a set of wheels of the bay a few months back, Ive started riding them, they run fine, but the rear hubs not making the same noise as the other set I have, its alot quieter, as quiet as cheap hubs. Is it just a case of the hub is in need of a service? Has been serviced with the wrong oil/grease - not the ck stuff? or may I have a fake? It looks identical to the other I have, just doesnt sound the same, though its silky smooth and engagement is fine.

I reckon if the engagement is fine you may be ok.

Could be completely wrong though. They had that fake thomson stem a whiel backbut they made a few critcal errors.

Maybe email king? There must be a serial or batch code or similar on it somewhere?

If you want I can ID it for you, but it'll mean stripping it. If you're thinking it's fake then I'll buy it.

More grease in it than the other hub? You can virtually silence a Hope by packing it full of grease - and they're louder than King hubs.

If one of the springs in it is weak/gone that would also make it quieter.

compare the engagement angle of the ratchet, King's are famous for the huge number of engagements per roatation. You should barely be able to move the casette backwards before it's engaged in the next position.

Will have to check next time I get the chance. Is this servicable outside of a bike shop? Ive done lots of stuff before as far as bike maintanance but not hubs!

king hubs are just about the easiest to work on. theres lots of info on their website.
as others have mentioned, you can make the hub significantly quieter with more lube in the ringdrive.

Thanks, that probably what the last person has done, just to quieten it down. Will this cause any problems long term, runing on grease thats not the ring drive CK stuff? Should I be stripping them down and using the proper stuff?

depending on how often you ride & what weather/trail conditions. I'd service them at least twice a year.
King told me a while back you can use pedros synlube as a quick fix. kings own product is closer to oil, than grease.

Goldtec hubs are supposed to be oiled not greased i believe also.

I cant see either having ill effects though but would go with recommended as thats what they had in mind when designed so is optimum.
