what's up with my sids??

just been rummaging in the loft and i've come across a pair of sids that i'd totally forgot about.
they are 2001 sid sl,condition wise they are fine but they seem to be permanantley locked out,well they move about 1cm.
they are no good to me but i don't want to flog 'em if the buyer is going to end up with a big rebuild bill.is it a simple fix?i don't want to send 'em off for an expensive service if i'm only going to be selling them anyway
any help much appreciated as always

I'd start off by separating the uppers and lowers to see if the oil from the damper has leaked into the fork lowers as this can cause a situation like you've found.

i've emptied the air chamber and with plenty of effort the stanchions will move to the full travel
is it easy to seperate the forks,i'm pretty ham fisted with my big fat fingers :oops:
 
To be honest I don't know a huge amount about 2001 forks, know a lot about pre 98 and 2004 onwards (guess when I was at uni!) but given the similarities between the modern and 'retro' forks it should be pretty easy.

I'm guessing you'll find a bolt in the bottom of each fork leg, you may need to remove the damper adjuster to expose one of them. Then you just undo these around half way, tap them with a mallet until they go into the fork lower. Then undo them fully to remove them and pull the forks appart.

The 2001 manual should be around though.

I've just stripped a set of 1997 manitous down which had a very similar problem and it was only down to the grease in the legs degrading with age and turning into glue!

Silly question, but you haven't got the lock out on the top of the right hand leg locked out have you? :D
I don't know anyone that would do a silly thing like that :oops: :oops:
