Disc brakes, the basics?

It looks likely I'm soon to be dipping my toes in the water that is disc brakes.
My knowledge extends as far as avid BB's are the only cable system worth looking at, but what about the rest,
Are there any makes best avoided,
Can you still get spares/pads and caliper mounts for the older hydraulic ones
Do they all weigh roughly the same (I'm not that weight obsessed but wouldn't want a system off a scooter)
Any help appreciated thanks.

if going second hand then avoid avid. in fact avoid avids in general unless elixir 7 or above or as stated bb7's. i like shimano ones for second hand or hopes for new.

Thanks for the reply.
Interesting as left to my own devices I would have chosen avids over most having used avid V's for years.
Are the early hopes (C2 C4) any good? i'm not bothered about being period correct.

I've always used Shimano discs and have found them to be very reliable. Can't speak for Hopes or Avids though.

Whats the deal with avid hydraulics?, what makes them so bad?

i have used a couple of pairs.

Didn't like the feel, modulation. Need a fair bit of maintenance - sticky pistons.

I couldn't write them off but I wouldn't choose to use them.

I have had oodles of Magura disc brakes and they just ....... work.
