My 1998(?) Caldera - please help identify original bits.

Hi folks.

I acquired last year an orange Kona Caldera, which I was told was a 1998 (its orange and has the jungle themed front Kona logo).

Its a nice bike but some parts arent original,

Ones identified so far:

-Rock Shox TORA 302 with remote lockout
-Mavic RIDE wheels and hubs
-Rear cassette = 9 speed?

Front mech is STX RC and rear mech is XT - thumb shifters are LX. Tyres IRC Mythos. Kore stem, & post, Ritchey Force bars.

A spec sheet would be great or further information on this model as I would like to try and return it to original, funds allowing.

Cheers guys.

Spec here

My GF back then got a new Caldera in 1998 and the spec looks about right from what I remember, certainly Judy T2's, Avid V's, Shimano 8 speed.

Thanks. Not sure where the 9 speed cassette come from. This sounds silly, but should the shifter be 9 speed compatible?

Actually, mine is orange if that helps.

Ah, its a 1999.

That makes sense too. I think most of the parts are there but same the forks and wheels were changed. Think maybe the shifters too as these have the small indicator windows on them.

The Tora is no lightweight, but why put an inferior Z4 on there (even if you could find one, that is)? The wheels are also better than the originals.

I would just ride it as it is. It was made for Mega 9 in the first place, so nothing on there is really out of place.

The backend is very light, the front end not so much, but I like the remote lockout feature...might look for some lighter ones with the same features perhaps as I think I could save a kilo or so.

I think it weighs in at just under 28lb total which isnt too bad.
