bonjour post 98 section.

just bought a 2 year old budget 29er. it weighs a ton so plan on a single speed conversion to remove the tat.

last night i grabbed the necessary parts off my klein but then realised the 29er has a 7 speed freewheel as opposed to a cassette.

the hub is a quando and the freewheel shimano.

1. what tools do i need to remove said freewheel?

2. is it a case of tool in, chainwhip on, turn tool?

replacing it with a single speed set up - how do i do this? is it possible to adjust the chainline or will i have to do that through the front end set up

also what gearing should i be looking at? 26" i tend to ride 38/16 ish

thanks guys n gals

A freewheel tool is similar to a cassette lockring tool but has less 'pronounced' splines and is longer.

We stick that in a vice at work and just unscrew using the wheel but you only really need a spanner for the tool and a good arm to hold the wheel, no chain whip.

Not sure about ratios, may want to go to a bigger ring up front or smaller cog up back as i may be right in think you will pedal out faster on the larger wheels?

No idea about chain line though! Think you would have to have a play up front as the ss freewheel cant move like on a freehub body.

In theory that should fit but the splines look like theyre for a cassette lockring.

Id say, its crc, try it and see, if not send it back!

Yeah freewheels are still around on lower on disc bikes/wheels.

It's called a Shimano UG tool, I think ChrisV40 has one, but they cost about 2 or 3 quid on ebay. He me still have the link I send him to buy one.
