That's because it just IS a lot more bike. The oversized tubes and huge seattube might have something to do with it as well, but basically it really is more bike.

You won't believe the difference in size when I put my 503 and my Copperhead next to each other. The modern one simply dwarfs the retro bike.
In fact the bottom of the Copperhead's headtube is higher than the top of the 503's.
