front mech help

Normal as in triple?

Yes, although one designed for smaller MTB chainrings might have to sit extra high for its tail to clear the rings. Road front mechs have a gentler curve as do earlier MTB mechs which typically went with 46-48T chainsets.

If you are using something like a Middleburn Duo, then no problems at all.

Beware that road mechs need different cable pull to MTB, so compatibility can be a headache unless you use non-indexing front shifters.

Iam putting a double slx chainset on my boardman and have a front mech that is for a tripple lying around, just thought could use it rather than forking out for another

As stated said yes you can. Shimano do do an slx double specific front mech which has a slightly smaller cage.

be fine, as stated just reduce the sideways movement using the stop screws and mount it as low as poss (and take a couple of links out of the chain too!)
