Anybody experienced at changing press in forks steerers?

I've done a couple in the past on Manitou forks with no problems, but the latest one on my Shivers is proving a bit tricky.
Biggest issue is keeping the load baring away from the sides of the crown.

Anybody an experience with this sort of thing?

not really but years ago i tried to knock the star nut out the bottom of a steerer tube so i could fit a headlock
got it half way down gave it another tap an the steerer tube came out the crown it didnt need much force to push it out

if you took it to a garage that have a bearing press they could probably press it out no probs

Why not get a suitable size socket - large enough for the base of the steerer to go through and put it on the underside of the crown and spread the load that way. After all it is only going to be the first inch or so that will be difficult?

I think it will be more difficult to support it to push the new one in.

if you were to use a bearing press like the one above they have various clamps an a vice type device that has a hole in the base alowing the item being pressed to pass through

you could put two vices next to each other both clamping each side of the crown with the steerer inbetween them an use a socket as mentioned above but if its was me i d use a press

Cheers folks.
Thats pretty much how i've done them in the past, but the crown of these particular forks is very steeply sloped so its near impossible to support the crown without fouling the steerer on the way out :?

I've phoned the importer and was pleasantly surprised that the job will only cost around £30

I think its the way to go, because if i damage/crack the crown the forks are scrap and they weren't cheap
