Ok its a 73 mm shell but what length?

I know it can vary with each chainset but i will only be using standard square taper for now.

Im thinking 115 or 118 but would appreciate some help.

In the past I would have said what is your chainset, Sheldon Brown will have the answer.

Sadly I've just fitted an XT 750 chainset that Sheldon said was a 113mm BB, and it's wrong.

Yeah your right. I normally take 113 as a good point to start from. Im thinking though surely as long as the tapers on bb's are the same, crank spec wouldnt matter?

if the axle is too short the crank will touch the frame

Yes thats true, but if thats so, it would be apparent as id presume the crank wouldnt tighten fully?
