I am looking to build one of my frames back up on a very tight budget to use for a kids seat. being a bit anal re: matching components i was hoping to use matching components for the running gear but the big question is which one?

i only need basic (not quite tourney basic) so was thinking alivio but there doesn't seem to be a lot out there so my thought turned to something like m510 deore but pricing up mech's, brakes & shifters put me over budget without even starting to look at wheels so, what else is there thats worth looking at? older lx? sram x3?

Merlin cycles have the best range of group-sets. Do you want disk or v- brakes and wheels, not going to be cheep, you could buy a good second hand bike and split the parts.
