Is it possible to still buy them, LBS said no and buy a new set of forks, sounds a bit drastic!

Sounds like your LBS just wanted to sell you some new forks?
I wouldn't be going there again if I were you!

Should have said forks are early 2000 Manitou magnums, might just strip them and find out what the crack is.
