front mech shims

i've just bought a new x-7 front mech for my new build (early 90's clockwork with a 28.6mm seat tube) the one i ordered claimed to be shimmed for 34.9, 31.8 & 28.6 but on getting it today, its only got the one shim fitted and its a couple of mm shy of clamping onto my tube properly.

is there a cheap universal shim available or a good home-bodge for such happenings (ice cream tub lid cut to shape and wrapped in insulating tape or other such randomness!) as i really don't want to send this damn thing back if i can help it as i'm hoping to do the build from start to finish on friday (assuming all the bits have landed in time)

I've been using a 31.8 mech on the 28.6 ovalised seatube on my winter/rain commuter hack for over a year now. I used a rubber shim from a light bracket and did it up nice and tight. It works fine and has never moved.
