what frame should i go for?

having just offered my frame in a wanted ad (in a moment of haste) it got me wondering - what frame should i go for?

currently its an orange gringo that, if i'm honest is a touch too small for me at 15" as it makes road riding hard but forest runs good fun (even if i feel a touch cramped in parts)

so, what frame should i look for as a replacement should i get rid of this one?

my ideal scenario would be a 2000 or later gringo (99 didn't have rear disc mounts but '00 did) in 17" but, that doesn't seem likely.

my spec.....

>17"ish c-c
>must be a decent brand, ideally an orange but would go for something slightly more obscure / less common if it ticked the boxes
>frame finish must be nice.... i really like the blue powdercoat this frame is in but i also like hi-gloss whites or a matt finish (ideally in black) i'm not a fan of brightly coloured frames really.
>has to be a hardtail
>budget is a bit trickier - got to be sub £100 if its frame only but will go over if it is a complete bike / part finished project.
>age isn't everything. i don't want brand new but i want it verging on retro - turn of the century or up to '02 at a stretch.


a quick scan on ebay has thrown up a few p7's but not a huge amount of anything else interesting so what should i look at for inspiration (or where else can i find something that ticks the boxes)

any suggestions of worthwhile frames to look at would be appreciated.

you would probably be able to get a rough explosif for under 100, then get it tarted up by argos? or how about a voodoo, maybe bizango, but more likely wanga. then theres something like an on-one or charge or dmr.
i noticed alot of p7's about atm too, are you wanting steel? carbon or ti is a bit out of reach on that budget, but loads of choice in aluminium
think harryburgundy has a nice s works stumpy frame going.
id say if you can stretch to 200 on the frame youd get a better result, then scrimp a bit on the components?

£100 is a reasonable amount for a second hand frame, especially if you keep you eyes open for something a little less searched for.

My KHS alite team was acquired for less than your budget, and is a truely excellent modern hard tail. With bugger all weight to it.
