I have an SRAM X5 rear mech that I want to put on a bike that has Shimano shifters and cassette.

Shouldn't be a problem should it???

Should have done the subject search before posting the question. I can now see that it's not that straightforward so might shelve my plan for a while.

Sram X rear mechs need Sram shifters

Shimano shifters need a Shimano rear mech

Chain and cassette do not matter so long as they are the same speed as the shifters, you can use a Shimano front mech with Sram shifters but not a Shimano rear

I thought some of the SRAM mechs worked? It depends if the are 1:1 or 1:2 pull.

All the SRAM mechs are 1:1 shifting ratio, so no. SRAM do make Shimano compatible shifters though, Rocket and Attack are the ranges iIrc.

Yup, all Sram X series mechs are 1:1

Only TRX, Rocket and Attack work with Shimano rear mechs.

My advice is dont mix and match unless youve seen a working group set on another bike.

Yrs ago a locla shop sold me the a set of suntour shifters after telling me they were compatable with my stx group set.

The long and short of it was the git lied!
