I might be able to get my hands on a Shimano Alfine for buttons.

Now, as some of you have seen, I've got a new bike - my Peugeot Black Mamba - click the link in my sig if you want to see it. It's a very good bike, but the wheels need new spokes (they're nasty galvanised things, and it's been ridden with some of them loose).

Does it spoil the bike if I cold set it to 135mm, then strip the dedanglers and retrofit this hub? It will still have the Alfine tensioner. But what do you think?

If it means putting Shimano on a bike, then no.

Even Peugeots have feelings.

Do it, I'm also giving serious thought to a hub geared old mtb. Plus its no worse than SS'ing it which numerous retrobikers have done

Agreed to doing it. See if you can get a King internal hub for peanuts too

Go for it :) as an aside have you saw the bankrupt stock frame on ebay? Looks lugged and brazed with sliding dropouts, would be ripe for an alfine conversion.
