Freeride ?

I am coming across new biking terms like free ride, wtf is it ?

And with that what new biking terms are out there, as I am becoming aware that now we have bikes for different types of riding so what gives ?

Bitd as now, my ATB does what it has always done, the limits on the terrain completely dependant on me the rider, not the bike, I ain't doing something then the bike isn't simple as that.

Free ride... I think it's where you leave the car at home, cadge a lift off someone and forget to give them petrol money....

So it's just mountain biking on a full suspension then?

but freeriding is being stretched, massive jumps etc.
go as large as you can

i personally consoder free ride to be adventure biking. not downhill but not xc, not necessarily all mountain, trails etc.
hardcore xc?

Bitd, it was just off road biking with whatever that involved. For me, off road touring, doing what I used to do with hillwalking but with a bike, which involved less hillwalking and the occaisional burn through the woods following animal trails, so single track I suppose. Was never into jumping or bunny hopping for that matter as chainrings stuck in logs was an annoyance. Now out and out mud plugging yeah, that was fun, but not if there was a flat cap wearing rambler around.

I'm with you, there is just all terrain biking (we dont really have mountains to bike in this country).

Folks today are just too desperate to be niche not helped by the manufacturers exploiting or even inventing half the terms.

If you ride off road on a bike then how you ride is just your choice and you equip yourself accordingly. Free Ride, Slope Style, Dual :roll:

The next big thing is free-trail-riding

It's nothing to do with marketing. Freeride (one word) is just like freeskiing, and that's where the idea was derived from initially (by Richie Slay and buddy in Kelowna BC. Both were skiers and decided to ride off the ridge and down the slope (off pist) like they did on skis. Same idea with snowboarding. The IMBA definition of combining technical riding (like trials) with downhill is pretty accurate. Another way of seeing it is that the whole mountain is your canvas. Though nowadays, the technical slopestyle/freestyle has been added in, and most people equate freeride with ladder bridges, skinnies, trannies, gap jumps and drops. Usually high and large. And of course it's not kosher to ride off trails, out of respect for nature and to prevent erosion or damaging fauna and wildlife habitat. Old school freeriders still like to ride things "natural"; i.e. logs without chicken wire etc. Anyway, in short the scene was developed by mountain bikers, not suit and tie marketing guys.

Edit: this was also in the early 90's. Quote Slay: "I think I had about 4 cm of suspension on my fork." Slays friend with mock surprise: "You had suspension?!?" The footage showed him on an old Spesh flying down the side of this ridge. So you can see these guys came from the same place you guys did.

but the suits love the pidgeon box
