Another to add to your list is the Cannondale Scalpel, xc biased full-sus bike with 100mm travel each end. I just bought a 2008 model with the Lefty fork for a few hundred quid.
Otherwise I'd seriously look at Boardman bikes, value for money wise (new or used) they're excellent, the Team FS I had last year was a better riding bike than the Ghost ASX it replaced. They almost always get great reviews.
Can you get a bike on the Cycle 2 Work scheme?
