I do that myself now too. At the time I'd not done a hose change at that point so I thought I'd let my lbs do it. It was a new brake, just needed a longer hose for the fold on the bike and the required routing. Hose was new and original formula kit (£45 which is damned expensive imho, but the cheapest I could find).

I can only assume air has expanded in there, which suggests a crap bleed.

Most likely. Formulas are precision machines. They require precision when they get assembled and bleeded.
That's why a lot of OEM formulas presented problems, curiously those equipping bikes made in TW, mass assembled by guys who probably doesn't ride and doesn't wrench that much, who spend 20 mins or less pre-assembling and boxing the bikes for their delivery.
