Kona Score frame

It’s heartening to see these rare and desirable frames still appearing from time to time – especially in the condition that we see here.

I’ve said before that the Score is not really for me, but seeing this makes me think that my collection of Konas may not yet be complete.

Come on Pip, you know what to do ;-)

This probably belongs in the 1998 Wanted section, but with regards to gems coming along from time to time, and my collection not yet complete…….

I’m still hoping that Kona produced a 6-4 King Kahuna other than the fairly well documented 1996 model.

The link that you sent me a while back showing Dario Cioni’s 1999 King Kahuna is stated as being a 6-4, which up until then I had no idea had been produced.

I can only assume that if the one in the link is actually a 6-4, and these were produced only in small batches.

http://cog.konaworld.com/tituesday-dari ... ng-kahuna/

What would be interesting to find out is were these produced with a 6-4 rear triangle similar to the 1996, or were they produced with all 8 tubes made from 6-4. This would have made them very expensive to manufacture, like the Merlin XLM 6/4 Ti-Works for example.

If someone like Canuck or magas can enlighten us.

Anyway, the 6-4 1996 King Kahuna had no gusseting, but presumably the qualities of a 6-4 rear end was enough to stiffen it up enough for team riders, some of whom were claiming that the Hei Hei flexed too much.

Dario’s 1999 has the gusseting of a standard King Kahuna from that year, so where did the 6-4 tubes (documented in the text) start and end?

As you know Al it seems likely that I saw Dario’s 6-4 for sale a while ago, but I would need to find one of these produced for a team rider that was nearer my height ;)
