Yeah, I do remember seeing them in the mid nineties BIKE Workshop. I can only guess were it is for. I don't know.

If I remember correctly the idea was to deliver constant power - as you go through the power point the spring compresses only to extend again in the deadspot. Ie the cranks and the rings are only linked by that spring and therefore can rotate faster and slower as required.

Very, very rare - could fetch some serious cash.
