Stainless steel tubing - though rather prone to cracking.

Oh contrare Simon,

Aermet is not stainless, it too will rust. What is it then?

Aermet was developed by Carpenter as a super high strength steel alloy ( a mix of iron, nickel, and cobalt with Cro-moly) for the military's aeroworks.

It was declassified and made available for public consumption sometime in the early 90's...don't hold me to that, it's all a bit sketchy in my mind now.

The material was used primarily in tubular landing gear configurations. It was marketed towards the bicycle industry and was played with by a number of builders with varying levels of success.

What's the skinny?

It's very light and strong, but very brittle. It's a bugger to machine due to it's hardness so go VERY slow and lubricate well to save your cutters. It can be tig welded to standard 4130 and basic steel tubing as well as brass brazed.

Crazy that I keep that kinda stuff stored in my head.

cheers,

rody
