There's clearly a scene tax going on with early 90's Treks (and I like early 90's Treks!)

I don't know about "scene tax", I think the seller of the TREK 970 has the idea that anything retro/classic must be worth hundreds, and that somehow all the added bits also add to the value (I'd be taking all that stuff straight off the bike!).
One for the "ebay madness" thread really (except its Gumtree).
