Caroline's Klein 'Cross Bike Vid

I'm sure that I'm going to get hell for showing a bike in less than concours condition here, but whatever :)

Here's the video I've just made that shows the condition of Caroline Alexander's 'cross bike that I'll be putting up on ebay when I get a minute (I hope this is within the forum rules... I just wanted the RB folks to get a preview for their own amusement before I put it up on the bay...) Don't worry, I'm not punting it here for offers. When it goes up, it'll be a full-on 99p start and an auction until the end, which'll be fun I'm sure.

Just thought you might want to see the amusing kludge of component spec on a pro's bike of the time. Campag shifting, but Dura Ace cranks, Hope hubs and a Sachs front mech...

Anyway... Here you go! (Puts tinfoil hat on and waits for the flaming...) :D

Who knows? I've not given it much of a prod. There's definitely some fur under there, but it all seems reasonably solid.

Cool bike with great history, but I would be nervous to clean it incase some of the paint came off!

Re:

One of my favourite Singletrack Bike Porns. Didn't realise you got to keep the bikes! ;)

is that bubbling paint hiding rot?

Technically yes, it's oxidation forming under the paint but aluminum doesn't rust in the same way ferrous materials do. Generally, and there are exceptions, aluminum will form aluminum oxide but it's a self-sealing layer. It forms but prevents oxygen from "digging deeper" into the metal. So when steel oxidizes (rusts), it continually exposes fresh metal to oxygen and eats away at the piece eventually causing it to fail.

This oxidation is nothing to worry about except that it might effect the paint more in the future, the bike will remain solid structurally.

I bought it with my own cash money!

I wish I attended that singletrack bike jumble, a couple of missed gems there. hope you enjoyed moab, I was there with nigel.

There were a lot of gems there I'm sure. It was kind of ahead of its time at the time...
Moab was awesome as ever... hope you had an equally good time.
