Did the mech go or was it just the brakes?

Is there a maximum cog size for the rear mech?

no, theres no writing on it telling you what cog size max or in total.

Assuming, that the cage lenght of this 750 RD is the same as on my short caged 900 RD, then MAX cog would be 32t and TOTAL cog 33t.

This 900 RD I'm riding without any problems with a 44 chainring and a 11-32 8 speed casette.

maybe this can help you further
