8 and 9 are the same, so basically either. (just the cogs are more closely spaced on 9 speed, so you need a dedicated shifter. 7 and 8 speed is same cog spacing, so shifters are cross compatible, but you can't fit an 8 speed cassette on a 7 speed hub).
 
Thanks for the advice – makes sense, that's why 9-speed chains are narrower isn't it? Anyway, very helpful, cheers.
 
Can I take the tyre please?

and is the frame 16" to the top of the seat-tube rather than centre of the top-tube? It looks pretty small...

Oh yeah - what diameter post does it take?
