looks liek a halo sas or tornado wheel?
not worth going to 10 speed
look for 7 8 or 9

how much did you pay for it?

is that a gt arrowhead?

cool ok, yeah im open to all suggestions, i just want to keep the simplicity and have only one gear selector (hope thats what its called lol!!) on the handlebars

just been and taken a better closer photo hope this helps thanks for the help :)

this is a single speed setup
whats near the wheel/on chain is a chain tensioner
not sure youd have anything on the handlebars unless it was left over from a previous build
wheel will take 7/8/9 speed no problem
best off sticking to 8 or 9 as the parts are more readily available

you will need
cable and outer
shifter
mech
chain
cassette

+1 for 9 speed, should be pretty simple

oh if you want 3 gears up front, you will need new cranks i suspect
and then of course chainrings

9 gears just on the rear wheel sounds just right thats great!
ok so i think i need:

a derailer, a gear shifter, a gear selecter cable, a 9 speed cassette and a longer chain,

it looks like, even at ebay prices for the cheapest ones its going to cost about £70+ for all this argh!

if anyone has a second hand setup please let me know :)

really fallen out with the bike today, spend over 2 hours trying to free up the seat post to raise the seat, its an aluminium frame and aluminium seat post, ive tried even the blow torch, its really been neglected i think has this bike :(

im sure you could do it cheaper on here
and crc sales etc.
i love my sram x7 shifter
you may prefer shimano :? personal preference

have you tried belting the seat?
otherwise spray lots of gt85 of wd40 around it and leave overnight
others will recommend pluzgas if you have it

you could also try taking out the bb and spraying stuff down the seat tube hole in the bb shell

I've tried soaking in penetrating oil and also wd40 but I don't know If it's as effective on aluminium?
I've left some caustic soda mix on tonight around the join I'll see what happens!
Ive tried hitting it with big hammers in all directions, I was quite stressed earlier :p Thanks for the tip I'll take seat off and spray inside too :)
