WTD: Top Swing Bottom Pull front mech - 98 FSR GC

I'm having trouble figuring out what the deal is with the front mech on my 98 Spesh FSR Ground Control.
I have a Deore 34.9mm bottom pull mech (i think its top swing), but i have a feeling its not right though.
its a bugger to fit the clamp on - and i've noticed there is a small dent where the previous one was fitted..?!?!?

Bikepedia says 35mm top swing bottom pull mech....

Not sure what i'm doing wrong here....
 
All sounds right to me.... 34.9, top swing (low clamp type) and bottom pull should work spot on with the FSR. I think I've got an XT in a box at home, I'll have a little rummage tonight.
 
yeah, i don't think my Deore one goes low enough, i have contact with the front cage when used on granny gear and highest at back (i know its not supposed to be used like that - chain line efficiency and all that -, but i don't have issues like that on my other bikes....)

XT one might do the job, PM me if you got one :) pics would be useful too!!
